Hailing from Ciudad Acuña, Coahuila, Mexico, Canto grew up in Del Rio, Texas, and initially pursued a career in music. He started by writing songs for Mexican TV shows and films and eventually transitioned to the stage, debuting in an adaptation of Pedro Almodóvar’s “All About My Mother.” His television journey began in 2009 with a role in “Estado de Gracia.”
Canto’s American acting career kicked off in 2013 with the Fox crime thriller series “The Following.” He went on to feature in ABC’s “Mixology,” Netflix’s “Narcos,” and “Blood and Oil.” Notably, he played Sunspot in Fox’s “X-Men: Days of Future Past” in 2014.
Joining the cast of “Designated Survivor” in 2016 as Vice President Aaron Shore, alongside Kiefer Sutherland’s U.S. President Tom Kirkman, Canto showcased his versatility. Besides acting, he directed short films like “Before Tomorrow” (2014) and “The Shot” (2020). His filmography includes titles like “Amanda and Jack Go Glamping,” “2 Hearts,” “Bruised,” “The Devil Below,” and “Agent Game.”
Warner Bros. Television and Fox Entertainment released a joint statement expressing their grief: “We are heartbroken to learn of the passing of Adan Canto. Adan Canto was not just a talented actor but a cherished friend. His presence enriched the Warner Bros. Television and Fox Entertainment families ever since he made his U.S. Introduction to ‘The Following’ well over a decade ago. His most recent role in ‘The Cleaning Lady’ was nothing short of exceptional, where he captivated audiences with a performance that highlighted his artistic brilliance, versatility, depth, and genuine vulnerability. The void left by his passing is truly incomprehensible, and our hearts ache in solidarity with his wife Stephanie, their children, and all those who held him dear. Adan will be deeply missed.
Adan Canto leaves behind a loving family, survived by his wife, Stephanie Ann Canto, and their two children, Roman Alder and Eve Josephine.
