Cleveland Browns Secure Joe Flacco as No. 3 Quarterback, Bolstering Practice Squad Roster

In a strategic move, the Cleveland Browns have officially welcomed veteran quarterback Joe Flacco to their practice squad, solidifying their quarterback roster. The signing comes in the wake of Deshaun Watson’s season-ending shoulder injury, creating a need for an experienced presence in the quarterback position.

The announcement of Flacco’s signing was made by the team on Monday, following initial reports on Sunday night, shortly after the Browns secured a 13-10 victory over the Pittsburgh Stealers, advancing their record to an impressive 7-3 for the season.

Flacco’s journey to the Browns started on Friday when he underwent a workout with the team, showcasing his skills and readiness to contribute. The decision to bring in Flacco was prompted by the unfortunate end to Watson’s season due to a displaced fracture of the glenoid in his right shoulder, requiring surgery.

To accommodate Flacco on the practice squad, the team made the necessary roster adjustment by releasing receiver Trinity Benson. This strategic move emphasizes the Browns’ commitment to fortifying their quarterback lineup, especially with the playoffs on the horizon.

At 38 years old, Joe Flacco brings a wealth of experience and a notable veteran presence to the quarterback position. The current quarterback group includes rookie fifth-round draft pick Dorian Thompson-Robinson and fourth-year former practice-squad journeyman P.J. Walker. Both have taken the field for the Browns this season, with Thompson-Robinson notably starting against the Stealers on Sunday.

Flacco, a first-round draft pick in 2008 by the Baltimore Ravens, boasts an impressive 16-season career in the NFL. His contributions to the Ravens include a pivotal role in their Super Bowl 47 victory, where he earned the Most Valuable Player award for his standout performance. Over the course of his career, Flacco has showcased his talents with additional stints at the Denver Broncos in 2019 and the New York Jets from 2020-2022.

The quarterback’s career statistics are equally noteworthy, completing 61.6% of his 6,299 passes with 232 touchdowns and 147 interceptions. With a career record of 99-81 (.550) as a starter, Flacco’s achievements extend beyond individual accolades, including Super Bowl triumphs and multiple AFC North championships. His playoff experience encompasses six appearances and three AFC Championship Game showdowns.

As the Browns gear up for their upcoming game against the Denver Broncos, Flacco’s familiarity with his former team adds an intriguing dynamic to the matchup. Cleveland fans can anticipate the seasoned quarterback’s impact both on and off the field as the team navigates the challenges of the remainder of the season.

In essence, Joe Flacco’s addition to the Cleveland Browns’ practice squad is not just a strategic move; it represents a melding of seasoned expertise with emerging talent, further solidifying the team’s quest for success in the current NFL season.
