It is with heavy hearts that the family of Eric Montross (Laura, Sarah, Andrew, and Megan) announces his passing on December 17, surrounded by loved ones at his home in Chapel Hill. Diagnosed with cancer in March, Eric faced this battle with his signature determination and grace, supported by the tremendous love expressed by many.
The Montross family deeply appreciates the unwavering support from the medical community, particularly the dedicated professionals at UNC Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center, who shared Eric’s fight with equal fervor. Being acquainted with Montross meant being a friend, and the family recognizes that the enduring influence of his generosity and thoughtful approach to life will persist in the hearts of those he touched with his profound and sincere kindness.
In these trying times, the family kindly requests privacy as they navigate through this difficult period.
Montross played for head coach Dean Smith and the Tar Heels from 1990-94, contributing to the NCAA championship win in 1993. Named first-team All-ACC in 1993, he earned NCAA East Region and Final Four all-tournament honors. Chosen in the first round of the NBA draft by the Boston Celtics, Eric graced the basketball court for a remarkable nine seasons in the league. He served as an analyst on the Tar Heel Sports Network for 18 seasons until stepping away this season. Additionally, he held the position of senior major gifts director at the Rams Club.
